For too many, the answer is no…
You see, most nonprofit leaders I talk with right now are making serious, strategic moves in their businesses. They’re restructuring programs to meet the moment, rebuilding boards and putting succession plans in place—in short, running a stronger organization than they were a year or two ago.
But for too many, the revenue model hasn’t caught up yet.
Across high-performing organizations, the intent is clear.
Leaders want to pull back from heavy dependence on federal dollars and the volatility that comes with delayed reimbursements or sudden policy changes. They’re also trying to scale general-operating revenue so they can fund infrastructure—systems, competitive salaries and reserves—that actually make growth possible.
Yet, at the same time, they’re desperate to wean the organization off transactional cycles—events, appeals and one-off campaigns that create spikes but not stability. And they’re not chasing “more of everything.” They’re desiring to go deeper rather than wider, aiming for a durable financing plan that truly funds the strategic plan, not a busier calendar.
🎯Here’s the hard truth: The development department that got you to today’s level of philanthropy may not be the team that gets you to the next level.
☝️That’s not a critique of anyone’s heart or hustle. It’s an acknowledgment that the business behind the fundraising has to change. And that’s okay. There is a path forward.
