Nonprofit Leaders: What is Keeping Your Nonprofit from Growing?

Image of a calculator and budgeting reports showing that the biggest thing that keeps nonprofit orgs from growing is their lack of spending— their irrational frugality.

In my experience, most nonprofit leaders and board members agree with the phrase, “You have to spend money to make money.”

But when you look at their budget, there is no evidence of this . . .

Evidence I’m looking for?

🔍Headcount increases as a result of the budget growing

🔍Technology to track donor experiences and generate more dollars

🔍Skills-based training for teams (like AI, Major-gifts, etc.)

🔍Marketing and Brand assets

🔍Major-gift Collateral

The biggest thing that keeps orgs from growing is their lack of spending— their irrational frugality.

You must identify and invest in resources on a regular basis to scale your organization’s revenue.

Full stop.

What would you add to this list?

If I had to shift this list slightly…I'd also add:

🔍Paying competitive (beyond living wage) salaries

I don't think it's a coincidence that my client who pays above living wage and corporate-competitive salaries also recently secured a 6- and 7-figure gen-ops gift.

Donors get it.

But, you may need to learn how to position your organization in a way that attracts these gifts. That's where the investments come in.

You ready? I can help you with that. Apply to work with me here.
