FORBES Nonprofit Council // What Does “Playing It Safe” Actually Cost Nonprofit Leaders?
What is your definition of being "stuck"?
Maybe it's a calendar so full it feels like success, even though nothing on it is actually moving your mission forward. In the nonprofit world, I see a specific kind of stuck all the time: leaders with bold strategic plans, meaningful missions, and capable teams, who are somehow still raising roughly the same dollars year after year.
As a member of the Forbes Nonprofit Council, I dug into this in this month's article.

The problem usually isn't effort. It's the model. And underneath the model, it's almost always a mindset.
In the article, I break down four patterns that quietly cap nonprofit growth, patterns I don't think get talked about enough:
✔️ Irrational frugality…treating a 2% budget decision like it's a 100% risk
✔️ The event treadmill…chasing a $250K gala goal while a $100K donor gets a rubber chicken dinner
✔️ Hiding…staying behind the database instead of building the relationship
✔️ The peer anchor…showing up "one up" or "one down" instead of as an equal
The organizations I've watched grow the most aren't the ones with the fanciest systems or the biggest teams. They're the ones whose leaders decided to stop playing it safe and start playing the long game instead.
How about you? Which of these four is quietly capping your growth?
