Nonprofit Leaders: Stop focusing on the things that are outside your control . . .

Image of a nonprofit leader at her desk with her hands on her head because she is stressed over things she cannot control

[In most meetings these days] . . . But, people aren’t going to give as much this year because of the economy!

I don’t buy this mentality.

Why?

The year was 2010, and I had just left my established corporate career to work at a nonprofit I was passionate about. If you were around the nonprofit sector in 2010 and 2011, you’ll remember that this was a time when everybody said, “Individuals can’t give right now.” [Hello, market/housing crash.]

Well? The organization 3X’d funding in 18 months...all in a seemingly “impossible” environment.

2020? Another example of an impossible environment. But, most of my nonprofit clients came to me in 2021 and 2022 flush with cash and ready to invest in long-term sustainability.

Even now in this ‘terrible economy’? The S&P 500 is UP about 5.51% year to date. From last year (July of 2024), the stock market is up 13.3%. Seriously.

Fundraiser: Stop focusing on the things that are outside your control.

Stay the course. Build relationships. Don’t stick your head in the sand.
